The Full Story
On June 21st, 2026 I was ranting to my husband about the various roadblocks in the writing process. I have watched so many great stories and talented storytellers freeze forever behind the same challenges time and again. One story can't get out of revisions. This writer has re-written the same book a dozen times and has lost the plot. Another can't bring their text down into a reasonable length, so they have a series when they meant to write a standalone. Others stay lost in a lotus-eater lair of research and planning.
The people are unique, but the problems are familiar. Writers get stuck or comfortable in one stage of the writing process well passed when that step has served its function. At times the only solution is to get a trusted colleague's insight on your work.
But how do you prepare for that feedback? Every writer I know has the shared experience of painful critique or fear that set their writing back. Every writer has a complicated relationship with taking pride and joy in their work----suffering through the embarassing drafts, the brilliance of a scene well executed, the arrogance of thinking people to want to read it, the humility of accepting help. Each definable step of the writing process chips away at the writer while developing the work, preparing the text and the author for receiving the ominous response of another person.
After two hours of listening, my husband cordially recommended that I rant all these thougts to a blank page, then give said page to all the writers who I wish would finish their books. Six days and nineteen hours later, I had completed Joy Draft (without Ai). Six weeks later I sent it to alpha readers. It is set for publication ten months after the idea hit.
