The Black Envelope

If you are on this page, odds are you are one of the lucky few who found one of my black envelopes at an Investive event out in the wild. Congratulations!

You likely also spoke with Lisa (who is suspiciously similar to a fae. I hope you didn't accidentally give her your name).

Investive is a great brand to work with, and an incredible community that I feel lucky and blessed to be a part of. I am happy to support them as they have supported me in turn. For more details on what Investive is doing lately, click here.

How the envelope works:

You pay $10.00 to purchase an envelope, which is an investment in your writing (record that $10.00 as an expense in your writing budget). Inside, there is a one-time-use code that you can exchange for either:

  • A $100.00 discount off a package of 4 editing meetings. Each meeting is a1-hour long video call dedicated to discussion of your project. I normally sell 4 hours of meeting time as a package for $150.00.

or

  • A $100.00 discount off a manuscript evaluation at a rate of 1 cent per word (a 25,000 word manuscript would be $250.

In addition to motivation, get real progress toward your goal of publishing (and a handy notebook/ pretty cardholder that can definitely be used as a bookmark to boot).

As a writer, it can be difficult to gain momentum on a project with no external deadlines or outside motivation. In my own writing journey, I found that urgent things in my life often pushed writing off of my schedule and into my stash of dreams and regrets.

One of the best things I did for my writing was hire an editor for a manuscript evaluation. I paid a deposit of a few hundred dollars (that was scary) and in exchange I got the promise that someone expected great writing out of me.

I had justification to prioritize my work, let the dishes sit until morning, put away my phone, and focus. “Sorry, I can’t make it to that party, I have a deadline with my editor,” and, “I don’t want to spend money on that, I have an editing contract in a few months,” were on my lips all the time. Friends and family took my writing seriously, and more importantly, I valued my work.

Your work is valuable too.

What you have to do:

Purchase the envelope, then contact me via email: amy.j.karas@gmail.com as soon as possible. If you contact me, and commit to beginning work by or before the date on the envelope, you can exchange that envelope's code for the discounted services stated above.

We will discuss everything else from there, including: a contract that protects your intellectual property and my business; an explanation of the formatting requirements of your project; and any other details we need to get you started on the next step of your writing journey.

But what if I miss the deadline?

If you miss your deadline by less than a year, the code can be exchanged for a $50 discount off of the services listed above. Your code expires entirely after 1 year. It's worth it to hit that deadline!

But what if I want a different type of edit?

We can absolutely discuss that! The process will be slightly different. We will begin with a sample edit (details on my website: amykaras.com). If we determine that your project is ready for a different type of edit, you will be able to exchange your code for services that I would normally charge about $100.00 for.  However, be aware that most projects start with the manuscript evaluation or mentoring meetings. If you refuse a manuscript evaluation, and the mentoring meetings, and I determine that your project is not yet ready for any other service I provide, you forfeit the discount.

But what if a hippopotamus steals my book (or some other edge case)?

I love your creativity already. The whole point is to eliminate excuses or delays, invest in yourself, and get your book finished. Email me, we will discuss how to move forward. amy.j.karas@gmail.com.

All sales are final because refunds would undermine the purpose of the investment.

*Please note that I am a freelance editor and not affiliated with any publishing house at this time (Stay tuned. There are shenanigans in the works).
